Welcome to Portugal and the beginning of an unforgettable cycling adventure with Peloton Grand Tours.

Over the next fifteen nights you’ll discover one of Europe’s most captivating countries, riding from the vibrant streets of Lisbon to the historic waterfront of Porto. Along the way you’ll experience spectacular Atlantic coastlines, medieval villages, UNESCO World Heritage sites, world-renowned wine regions and some of the finest cycling roads in Europe.

Today is all about settling in, meeting your fellow travellers and preparing for the incredible journey that lies ahead.

Arrival in Lisbon

Guests will make their own way to Bairro Alto Hotel, our luxury home for the next two nights, located in the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre.

Check-in is available from 3:00 pm, giving you time to relax after your journey or begin exploring this fascinating city.

Our tour staff will be available throughout the afternoon to welcome guests, answer questions and assist with anything you may need before the tour begins.

Meanwhile, our mechanics will assemble and thoroughly inspect every bicycle, ensuring each bike is perfectly prepared for the days ahead. Riders bringing their own bicycles are welcome to meet with our mechanics for a final safety inspection and any last-minute adjustments.

Optional Orientation Ride

For those arriving early, we offer a relaxed 20–30 km orientation ride along Lisbon’s picturesque waterfront.

This easy spin follows the banks of the Tagus River, providing an opportunity to familiarise yourself with your bicycle, loosen the legs after your flight and enjoy your first taste of cycling in Portugal.

The route passes some of Lisbon’s most recognisable landmarks, including Praça do Comércio, the historic harbour precinct and the beautiful riverside promenades before returning to the hotel.

If you prefer to explore on foot, Lisbon offers countless attractions within easy walking distance of the hotel.

Built across seven hills overlooking the Tagus River, Lisbon is one of Europe’s oldest capitals and a city rich in maritime history, magnificent architecture and vibrant culture.

At 7:30 pm, we make the short walk to Solar dos Presuntos, one of Lisbon’s most celebrated Portuguese restaurants.

Established in 1974, this iconic restaurant is renowned for its warm hospitality and authentic regional cuisine. It provides the perfect setting to celebrate the beginning of our Portuguese adventure.

Enjoy an evening of outstanding food, excellent Portuguese wines and lively conversation as friendships begin to form before tomorrow’s first ride.

The Adventure Begins

After enjoying a leisurely breakfast overlooking the rooftops of Lisbon, it’s time to roll out on the first official ride of our Portuguese adventure.

Today’s ride introduces you to everything that makes Portugal one of Europe’s hidden cycling gems—quiet coastal roads, spectacular Atlantic scenery, charming seaside villages and one of the country’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Leaving the city behind, we follow the broad Tagus River before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Within minutes, Lisbon’s busy streets give way to sweeping coastal boulevards, beautiful beaches and fishing harbours.

Our first destination is the sophisticated resort town of Cascais.

Cascais – Portugal’s Riviera

Once a small fishing village, Cascais became the summer playground of Portuguese royalty during the late 1800s. Today it is regarded as one of Portugal’s most elegant seaside towns, with palm-lined boulevards, luxury yachts, boutique shopping and excellent cafés.

We’ll stop here for our first coffee together at one of the waterfront cafés overlooking the marina.

Take time to wander through the cobbled streets before we continue north along one of the most scenic coastal roads in Portugal.

Riding the Wild Atlantic Coast

Leaving Cascais, the scenery changes dramatically.

The road hugs towering cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean as waves crash against the rugged coastline below.

We’ll pass the spectacular Guincho Beach, internationally renowned for surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding. On windy days, the power of the Atlantic is simply breathtaking.

This section is a favourite among Portuguese cyclists and is often used for professional training camps thanks to its smooth roads and incredible scenery.

Cabo da Roca – The Edge of Europe

Soon the road begins a gentle climb through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, eventually reaching Cabo da Roca.

Standing 140 metres above the Atlantic Ocean, this dramatic headland marks the westernmost point of mainland Europe.

The famous stone monument proudly proclaims:

“Where the land ends and the sea begins.”

There is plenty of time for photographs while enjoying panoramic views stretching across the endless Atlantic Ocean.

Into the Mountains of Sintra

Leaving Cabo da Roca, we enter the cool forests of the Sintra Mountains.

Twisting roads shaded by eucalyptus, cork oak and pine trees provide a wonderful contrast to the exposed coastline we’ve just ridden.

Cyclists have been enjoying these roads for decades, and it’s easy to understand why. The climbs are steady rather than steep, the descents are exhilarating and traffic is generally light.

As we descend into Sintra, the colourful towers of Pena Palace appear above the forest canopy.

Lunch in Sintra

Today’s lunch is at one of Sintra’s charming cafés nestled amongst the narrow cobbled streets.

After lunch there is time to explore the historic centre before visiting the magnificent Pena Palace, arguably Portugal’s most recognisable landmark.

Built during the 19th century, the palace combines Gothic, Moorish and Renaissance architecture and sits high above the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, the views extend all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Those preferring to remain in town can browse the boutique shops, enjoy a coffee or sample Sintra’s famous Travesseiros almond pastries.

Return to Lisbon

Our afternoon ride returns to Lisbon via quieter inland roads through traditional Portuguese villages before rejoining the Tagus River.

The final kilometres provide wonderful views back across the city skyline as we arrive at our hotel after a memorable first day in the saddle.

From Portugal’s Capital to its Best Preserved Medieval Town

After two nights in Lisbon, we leave the capital behind and begin our journey north through Portugal.

Today’s ride takes us from the bustling streets of Lisbon into the peaceful Portuguese countryside, where vineyards, cork oak forests and traditional farming villages replace the city skyline. It’s a wonderful transition from urban Portugal to the quieter rural landscapes that define much of the country.

Our destination is one of Portugal’s true gems — the magnificent medieval town of Óbidos, a perfectly preserved walled village that appears almost unchanged since the Middle Ages.

Leaving Lisbon

Following breakfast, we roll out through the quieter northern suburbs before joining scenic country roads that quickly leave the city behind.

The terrain is gently undulating rather than mountainous, making for an enjoyable day in the saddle. Quiet roads wind through vineyards, orchards and small farming communities where life still moves at a relaxed pace.

The Portuguese countryside is wonderfully authentic, with whitewashed cottages, olive groves, vineyards and colourful roadside cafés appearing around almost every corner.

Morning Coffee – Mafra

Our first stop is the historic town of Mafra, dominated by one of Europe’s most impressive royal buildings.

Towering above the town is the magnificent Mafra National Palace, commissioned by King João V during Portugal’s Golden Age. Completed in the eighteenth century, this enormous Baroque masterpiece features more than 1,200 rooms, over 150 staircases and one of the world’s most beautiful historic libraries containing around 36,000 rare books.

Enjoy coffee in the town square while taking in the scale of this remarkable building before continuing north.

Riding Through Portugal’s Wine Country

Beyond Mafra the roads become even quieter as we enter the fertile Oeste region.

Known for producing excellent wines, fruit and vegetables, this landscape is characterised by gently rolling hills covered with vineyards and orchards. During spring the countryside is particularly beautiful, with wildflowers lining many of the roads and vineyards bursting into life.

The riding is relaxed and enjoyable, with plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs of traditional windmills, ancient churches and picturesque villages.

Lunch Among the Vineyards

Today’s lunch is enjoyed at a traditional Portuguese restaurant surrounded by vineyards, where you’ll sample regional produce and local wines from the Oeste wine region.

This is authentic rural Portugal—simple, welcoming and full of flavour.

Following lunch, the final kilometres continue through peaceful countryside before the medieval walls of Óbidos come into view on the horizon.

Arrival into Óbidos

Few arrivals are as memorable as cycling into Óbidos.

Surrounded by beautifully preserved stone walls dating back to the 12th century, the town is often described as one of the prettiest villages in Europe.

Passing through the ancient gateway, you’ll immediately feel transported back in time. Narrow cobbled streets wind between whitewashed houses decorated with colourful flowers, artisan shops and traditional cafés, all watched over by the imposing medieval castle.

For centuries Óbidos was known as the “Wedding Gift Town.” Portuguese kings traditionally presented it to their queens as a wedding gift, and its romantic atmosphere continues to enchant visitors today.

Portugal’s Wild Atlantic Coast

Today is a complete contrast to yesterday’s inland ride.

Leaving the medieval walls of Óbidos behind, we head west towards Portugal’s spectacular Atlantic coastline, where dramatic sea cliffs, golden beaches, traditional fishing villages and powerful ocean swells create one of the country’s most memorable cycling experiences.

Today’s ride is slightly shorter, allowing plenty of time to stop, take photographs and soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful stretch of coastline.

Through the Countryside to the Sea

After breakfast we roll out through the ancient gateway of Óbidos before descending into the fertile countryside surrounding the famous Óbidos Lagoon.

Quiet country roads weave through orchards, vineyards and vegetable farms before reaching the tranquil waters of Foz do Arelho, where the lagoon meets the Atlantic Ocean.

This peaceful fishing village is one of Portugal’s hidden gems, offering magnificent views across calm blue waters on one side and the wild Atlantic Ocean on the other.

Along the Silver Coast

Turning north, we begin riding one of Portugal’s most scenic coastal roads.

Known as the Costa de Prata or Silver Coast, this region is famous for its endless beaches, rugged cliffs and relaxed seaside communities.

Unlike the Algarve in southern Portugal, the Silver Coast remains wonderfully authentic, with far fewer tourists and some of the country’s best road cycling.

The smooth roads gently rise and fall as they follow the coastline, revealing breathtaking ocean vistas around almost every corner.

Coffee Stop – Baleal

Our morning coffee stop is in the charming seaside village of Baleal.

Connected to the mainland by a narrow sand spit, Baleal is surrounded by pristine beaches and has become one of Portugal’s premier surfing destinations.

Take time to enjoy a coffee overlooking the Atlantic while watching surfers tackle the rolling waves that arrive from thousands of kilometres across the ocean.

Peniche – Portugal’s Historic Fishing Port

A short ride brings us to Peniche, one of Portugal’s most important fishing ports.

Originally built as a fortified peninsula protecting Portugal from seaborne attack, Peniche later became famous for its fishing fleet and, more recently, as one of Europe’s premier surfing destinations.

We’ll ride around the harbour before continuing to Cabo Carvoeiro, a spectacular headland where towering limestone cliffs plunge into the Atlantic below.

The constantly crashing waves have sculpted remarkable rock formations over thousands of years, creating one of the most photographed sections of Portugal’s coastline.

Lunch is served overlooking Peniche Harbour, where colourful fishing boats unload the day’s catch.

Fresh seafood is naturally the specialty here, with grilled fish, octopus and shellfish among the local favourites.

For those preferring something lighter, there are excellent Portuguese salads, grilled chicken and traditional sandwiches.

Returning to Óbidos

Leaving the coast behind, we head inland through rolling farmland and traditional villages.

This quieter section of today’s ride showcases another side of Portugal, where vineyards, orchards and olive groves dominate the landscape.

The final climb returns us to the medieval walls of Óbidos, where another relaxing afternoon awaits.

Following Portugal’s Magnificent Atlantic Coast

Today we continue north along Portugal’s spectacular Atlantic coastline, riding through picturesque fishing villages, peaceful farmland and some of the country’s most beautiful coastal scenery.

Our destination is Nazaré, a town that has become world famous for producing the largest surfed waves on Earth. Yet long before giant-wave surfing captured international headlines, Nazaré was one of Portugal’s most important fishing communities, and it still proudly celebrates its maritime traditions today.

With rolling coastal roads, sweeping ocean views and a memorable seafood dinner awaiting us this evening, today promises to be one of the highlights of the tour.

Leaving the Medieval Walls Behind

After breakfast, we farewell the enchanting town of Óbidos and roll north through gently undulating countryside.

The morning ride passes vineyards, orchards and traditional Portuguese villages before descending once again toward the Atlantic coastline.

The roads remain wonderfully quiet, allowing us to ride side by side while enjoying expansive views across fertile farmland and the sparkling ocean beyond.

São Martinho do Porto

Our first major stop is the delightful seaside town of São Martinho do Porto.

Famous for its perfectly shell-shaped bay, this picturesque village offers one of the safest natural harbours in Portugal. Unlike the powerful Atlantic beaches found elsewhere along the coast, the calm waters here have made São Martinho a favourite holiday destination for Portuguese families for generations.

We’ll enjoy our morning coffee overlooking the bay before taking time to wander the waterfront promenade and admire the colourful fishing boats gently moored along the shoreline.

Riding Above the Atlantic

Leaving São Martinho, the road climbs steadily onto the coastal headlands.

This section offers magnificent views as the Atlantic stretches endlessly towards the horizon while waves crash against rugged cliffs far below.

The rolling roads, fresh sea air and constantly changing scenery make this one of the most enjoyable cycling days of the tour.

Throughout today’s ride you’ll notice traditional fishing villages perched above secluded beaches, many of which remain virtually unchanged from generations past.

Lunch Along the Coast

Lunch is enjoyed at a traditional Portuguese restaurant overlooking the Atlantic.

Fresh local seafood is naturally the highlight, although there are plenty of regional meat dishes and lighter options available.

Take time to relax and enjoy the spectacular coastal setting before the final ride into Nazaré.

Arrival in Nazaré

The approach into Nazaré is unforgettable.

As we crest the final rise, sweeping views open across the Atlantic Ocean and the colourful fishing town below.

Before descending into town, we’ll ride to the clifftop district of Sítio, home to one of Portugal’s most famous viewpoints.

Here you’ll stand nearly 110 metres above the Atlantic Ocean looking down upon the legendary Praia do Norte.

During winter, enormous swells generated thousands of kilometres away combine with the deep underwater Nazaré Canyon to produce waves exceeding 20 metres, attracting the world’s best big-wave surfers.

Even outside the giant-wave season, the scenery is truly spectacular.

Today we leave the Atlantic Ocean behind and venture inland through the very heart of Portuguese history.

This remarkable stage combines beautiful rural cycling with two of Portugal’s most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites before arriving in Coimbra, the country’s medieval capital and home to one of Europe’s oldest universities.

Few rides combine so much history, culture and scenery into a single day.

Leaving Nazaré

After breakfast we leave the fishing town of Nazaré, climbing gently away from the coastline before entering peaceful farming country.

Almost immediately the landscape begins to change.

The salty sea air is replaced by vineyards, olive groves and rolling farmland as quiet country roads wind through traditional Portuguese villages.

This is authentic central Portugal, where agriculture continues much as it has for centuries and local cafés remain gathering places for village life.

Alcobaça Monastery

Our first destination is the historic town of Alcobaça.

Dominating the town is the magnificent Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, one of Portugal’s greatest Gothic masterpieces.

Founded in 1153 by the Cistercian Order, the monastery played an enormous role in shaping Portuguese agriculture, education and religion during the Middle Ages.

Inside lie the magnificent tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, whose tragic love story remains one of Portugal’s most famous legends.

Separated in life but buried facing one another in death, legend says they will be the first to see each other when the Last Judgment arrives.

We’ll enjoy coffee in the charming square before continuing our journey.

Quiet Roads Through Central Portugal

Leaving Alcobaça, we continue along beautiful secondary roads through vineyards, orchards and fertile farmland.

Traffic is minimal, allowing riders to fully appreciate the peaceful countryside.

Traditional stone farmhouses, olive trees and small churches dot the landscape as we gradually make our way towards another of Portugal’s architectural treasures.

Batalha Monastery

By late morning we arrive at Batalha.

The extraordinary Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória was built to commemorate Portugal’s famous victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, a battle that secured Portugal’s independence.

The monastery is widely regarded as one of Europe’s greatest examples of Gothic architecture, with soaring vaulted ceilings, intricate stone carvings and the remarkable Unfinished Chapels, left incomplete for more than five centuries.

There is time to admire this architectural masterpiece before enjoying lunch nearby.

Riding Through Two Thousand Years of History

Today is a magnificent loop ride through the rolling countryside south of Coimbra, combining peaceful country roads with one of the most important archaeological sites on the Iberian Peninsula.

Buçaco National Forest

Our first destination is the magnificent Buçaco National Forest, one of Portugal’s hidden treasures.

Originally protected by Carmelite monks in the 17th century, this enchanting forest is home to hundreds of rare tree species collected from around the world.

Towering cedar, giant redwoods, ancient cypress trees and lush ferns create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Portugal.

Nestled amongst the forest is the extraordinary Buçaco Palace, originally built as a royal hunting lodge and now one of Portugal’s most beautiful historic hotels.

Sunrise Over the Douro

After breakfast overlooking the river, we roll out from Pinhão while the morning sun illuminates the terraced vineyards surrounding the valley.

Our first stop is the charming village of Sabrosa, best known as the birthplace of the great Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, whose expedition completed the first circumnavigation of the globe.

Leaving Sabrosa, we continue towards Alijó, riding quiet roads through vineyards producing some of Portugal’s finest wines.

Through the Mountains of Trás-os-Montes

Leaving the Douro behind, today’s route enters the rugged region of Trás-os-Montes, literally translated as “Beyond the Mountains.”

Historically isolated by its mountainous terrain, this region has preserved much of its traditional Portuguese character.

Quiet roads wind through forests of pine, eucalyptus and chestnut trees, while tiny granite villages appear scattered across the hillsides.

Traffic is almost non-existent, making this one of the most peaceful rides of the tour.

Our morning coffee stop is the beautiful city of Vila Real, an important regional centre dating back to the 13th century.

Conquering Portugal’s Legendary Climb

Today is one of the defining stages of the Portugal Grand Tour.

Leaving the elegant riverside town of Amarante, we head into the mountains of northern Portugal to conquer Senhora da Graça, one of the country’s most iconic cycling climbs and a regular feature of the Volta a Portugal.

The ride combines challenging mountain roads, spectacular scenery and a finish in Guimarães, the historic city regarded as the birthplace of Portugal.

For many guests, today will become one of the most memorable cycling days of the entire tour.

Departing Amarante

After breakfast we leave the banks of the River Tâmega and begin riding through peaceful valleys surrounded by vineyards, forests and traditional farming communities.

The first kilometres provide an enjoyable warm-up before the terrain gradually begins to rise.

The roads are beautifully surfaced, lightly trafficked and popular with local cyclists preparing for events throughout northern Portugal.

Into the Mountains

As we continue north the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic.

Forests of chestnut, pine and eucalyptus give way to rugged granite peaks while small villages appear tucked into the hillsides.

Stone farmhouses, ancient churches and grazing livestock create a timeless landscape that feels far removed from Portugal’s busy cities.

The excitement builds as we approach the base of today’s famous climb.

Climbing Senhora da Graça

The ascent to Nossa Senhora da Graça, also known as Monte Farinha, is one of Portugal’s great cycling challenges.

Featured regularly in the Volta a Portugal, this climb has crowned countless champions and is regarded by Portuguese cyclists as a rite of passage.

The climb stretches for approximately 8 kilometres, averaging around 7% with several steeper ramps near the summit.

The road winds through dense forest before opening onto magnificent panoramic views across northern Portugal.

As you climb, it’s easy to imagine the excitement of the Volta a Portugal as riders battle for victory on these very roads.

Reaching the summit beside the striking hilltop sanctuary is a moment to savour.

From the terrace beside the sanctuary the views stretch across mountain ranges, forests and fertile valleys extending towards the Atlantic Ocean.

Descending Towards Fafe

The reward for all the climbing is an exhilarating descent towards the town of Fafe.

The sweeping corners, smooth road surface and beautiful scenery make this one of the most enjoyable descents of the tour.

The Birthplace of Portugal and its Religious Heart

Today is one of the most culturally rewarding days of the tour.

Our ride takes us through the lush green countryside of the Minho, Portugal’s oldest province, to the historic city of Braga, often referred to as the Religious Capital of Portugal.

We’ll climb to the magnificent Bom Jesus do Monte, one of the country’s most iconic landmarks, before returning to Guimarães for a relaxing final evening in this beautifully preserved medieval city.

This stage combines wonderful cycling with some of Portugal’s most significant history, architecture and religious heritage.

Through the Green Heart of Minho

After breakfast we leave Guimarães on quiet country roads winding through the fertile Minho countryside.

This region is noticeably greener than the Douro Valley, with rolling farmland, vineyards, stone cottages and small villages surrounded by fields and forests.

The Minho is also home to Portugal’s famous Vinho Verde, a fresh, lightly sparkling wine produced throughout the region.

The roads are smooth, gently undulating and a pleasure to ride.

Arrival in Braga

Soon the towers of Braga Cathedral appear on the horizon as we enter one of Portugal’s oldest cities.

Founded more than 2,000 years ago by the Romans, Braga later became the religious centre of Portugal and remains home to numerous churches, monasteries and beautiful public squares.

We’ll stop in the historic centre for coffee and enjoy time exploring the elegant pedestrian streets lined with cafés, boutique shops and beautifully restored buildings.

Climbing Bom Jesus do Monte

Leaving the city behind, we begin the short but memorable climb to Bom Jesus do Monte.

This famous pilgrimage site is instantly recognisable by its spectacular Baroque staircase, which climbs gracefully through beautifully landscaped gardens towards the hilltop sanctuary.

Although the road climb is gentle, the reward at the summit is magnificent.

From the terrace you’ll enjoy sweeping panoramic views across Braga, the Minho countryside and, on a clear day, all the way towards the Atlantic Ocean.

The sanctuary itself is regarded as one of Portugal’s architectural masterpieces and has welcomed pilgrims for centuries.

Today marks the final point-to-point ride of our Portuguese adventure.

Leaving the medieval streets of Guimarães behind, we journey west through the lush Minho countryside before reaching the Atlantic Ocean at the historic fishing town of Vila do Conde.

From there we follow Portugal’s beautiful northern coastline before arriving in magnificent Porto, one of Europe’s most beautiful river cities and the home of world-famous Port wine.

Today’s ride is a fitting finale to our journey across Portugal, combining peaceful country roads, spectacular coastal scenery and a memorable finish along the banks of the Douro River.

Leaving Guimarães

Following breakfast, we farewell the city where Portugal was born and begin riding west through the fertile Minho region.

Quiet roads pass vineyards, traditional farms and small villages, while gentle rolling terrain makes for an enjoyable morning in the saddle.

This region produces much of Portugal’s famous Vinho Verde, and the vineyards stretching across the countryside create a distinctly different landscape to the steep terraces of the Douro Valley.

Through Northern Portugal

Today’s route follows a network of quiet secondary roads linking centuries-old villages where life still revolves around agriculture and family-owned businesses.

Stone churches, granite cottages and colourful flower gardens line the route, while locals often greet passing cyclists with a friendly wave.

The pace is relaxed, allowing plenty of opportunities to appreciate the charm of northern Portugal before reaching the Atlantic once again.

By mid-morning we arrive in the beautiful coastal town of Vila do Conde.

Founded in the Middle Ages and closely linked to Portugal’s Age of Discovery, Vila do Conde became one of the country’s most important shipbuilding centres during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Today its attractive marina, historic waterfront and long sandy beaches make it one of northern Portugal’s most popular seaside destinations.

Along the Douro River

After breakfast we descend from our hotel to the banks of the Douro River.

The morning begins with an easy ride along the river promenade as colourful traditional boats gently float on the water and Porto slowly comes to life.

Passing beneath the famous Dom Luís I Bridge, we follow the river west towards the Atlantic Ocean.

Elegant villas, beautifully landscaped parks and historic waterfront buildings line the route as the river gradually widens on its journey to the sea.

Welcome to Belgium! Getting from Brussels Airport (Zaventem) to Ghent is simple and convenient. You have a few easy options depending on your preference for speed, comfort, or cost:

🚆 By Train (Recommended) – Fast, Direct, and Scenic

• Duration: About 55 minutes

• Frequency: Every 30–60 minutes throughout the day

• Steps:

  1. After collecting your luggage, follow signs to the train station located below the airport (Level -1).

  2. Buy a ticket to Gent-Sint-Pieters station. You can purchase it at ticket machines, the NMBS/SNCB desk, or online.

     • Approximate cost: €17–€20 (one-way)

  3. Take the direct train to Gent-Sint-Pieters, or one with a short change at Brussels-North or Brussels-South.
